Sauvignon Blanc

16.5 ACRES

Sauvignon Blanc grapes

Our Sauvignon Blanc has appeared in wines from Benziger, Duckhorn and MacLeod Family Vineyard.

Sauvignon Blanc is planted on a north sloping, rocky river terrace on an uplifted fault block well above the valley floor. The soil is the Glen Ellen alluvial formation consisting of some 80 to 100` of well-drained cobbles, boulders, and unsorted rocks with clay and sand lenses. Underlying bedrock is a series of volcanics of lava and rhyolite flows and volcanic tuffs. Soil and subsoil are estimated to be over 30% boulders and unsorted rocks, some up to four feet in diameter. This coarse material was deposited by violently flowing rivers eroding material from the Mayacamas mountain range to the east.

Our clone is from the most famous Sauternes producer Chateau d`Yquem. The clone, FPMS 01, which has the longest history in the U.C.Davis program and was originally collected from Wente Bros. by Dr. Harold Olmo in 1958. Wente Bros. obtained this source when they bought the El Mocho Vineyard in 1925. El Mocho vineyard had been planted in the 1880s with cuttings from Chateau d` Yquem in Bordeaux.

The dry, coarse soil material required the selection of a tough aggressive rootstock. We chose 110R.

Grapes for winemakers

Noticed our winery is small, while our property is big? Wondering if there's a chance we'd part with any of these prized grapes? Give us a call (707) 833-4312.

Mike Lee, MacLeod Family Consulting Winemaker, Founder of Kenwood Winery, had this to say about the time he's spent with our ranch:

"When I was the winemaker at Kenwood we used the MacLeod Sauvignon Blanc grapes for 25 consecutive harvests. The grapes from the rocky hillside terrain at their vineyard always produced wines with great flavors and aromas. I used their grapes in our Reserve program since its beginning."
